If you still haven’t witnessed the largest team sport in the world, then this year could be a good opportunity to be a part of the Champakkulam Boat Race in Kerala’s Alappuzha District on June 20, 2016.
The Champakkulam Moolam Vallam Kali marks the beginning of the season of boat races that goes well into the month of September. The venue, a serene village in Alappuzha district is decked up with bright colors and will be an arena for boat races in various categories like the chundan (snake-boat), veppu, iruttu kuthi, churulan, etc. although, the majestic snake-boat race is worth watching.
Being the largest sporting event in the world, the snake-boat race is often considered to be the ultimate test of endurance, speed and skill. As the oarsmen set the pace of their boats on the placid waters of the River Pamba, crowds go berserk with excitement and the river becomes a track on energy and merriment.
To reach the venue one can take the train to Thrissur railway station, about 24.8 km away or by air to Cochin International Airport which is about 77.7 kms. There are several hotels and homestays from budget to luxury to choose from.
